Buckling Roof Shingles, Causes And Repair

Shingle-type roofs possess one of the most complicated roofing system designs

. Aside from the obscure interlocking or overlapping system applied during the assembly of the shingles, it requires additional substrate materials to ensure the entire roof is waterproof. Furthermore, shingle-type roofs are very susceptible to immediate damage, such as cracks and buckling.

Buckling is a common issue with poorly installed shingle-type roofs. The installation process starts with preparing the underlying substrate of the roofing system before starting to assemble the shingles. Insulation is first secured right below the rafters before placing the water resistant layer, usually covered with felt. Then the shingles can be assembled. If each step is not done properly, buckling can occur later.

This roof damage is common in places where structures are mostly made of bricks and shingles. However, there are roofing contractors who resort to repairing shingles defects by just applying a new set of shingles over the affected region, which also results in buckling.

To prevent buckling from occurring, Omaha roofing professionals suggest that the roofing system must be provided with adequate ventilation to avoid moist buildup. It is also recommend dismantling old shingles before replacing them with newer ones to ensure good results and better aesthetic results.
