People come to Buenos Aires for many reasons: business trips, holiday tours, sporting tours, especially polo and soccer, and to look for a comfortable, even luxurious hotel or apartment as a jumping off place for tourists exploring the whole of South America. There are even some who are aware of Argentina's history. Many travellers tend to look to Europe and Asia for historical interest, but Argentina has its share of fascinating historical figures, who played out their extraordinary lives, and left an indelible stamp on the whole world. At least three of them have become household names worldwide.

Possibly because of the famous musical of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Evita Peron is one of the first few names that springs to mind when they think of Argentina. There are very interesting walking tours following the footsteps' of this famous woman. She has left her memory in many of the barrios [neighbourhoods] of Buenos Aires. The Buenos Aires barrio of San Telmo is a place where she is still revered. There is a mural of her portrait on the building of the General Workers Union, from where she and her husband began their powerful calling. Nearby is the Eva Peron Foundation' at the University of Engineering. At the Plaza de Mayo is the Pink House' site, where she gave some of her famous speeches from the balcony. At the young age of 33 years Evita Peron died of cancer and was buried at the Recoleta Cemetary, ironically surrounded by many of her political enemies.There is also an Evita Museum, where much of her personal memorabilia, photos and videos are on display.

Argentina is the birthplace of the highly controversial Che Guevara, the leftist inspired icon of revolution in the whole continent of South America.By some he was regarded as a cold blooded, fanatical killing machine whereas by some others he was perceived as a hero and a martyr whose ideal principle was that people should be driven by moral and not by materialistic motives. The following adjectives have been widely used to describe him: dogmatic, obstinate, narrow, determined, brave, sincere.

The United States CIA considered him the most feared revolutionary because of his personal charisma.

Although born in Rosario, Argentina, he travelled as a medical student throughout South America and is best known for the part he played in the Cuban Revolution. In Congo Kinshasa and later in Bolivia he played a part in the uprisings there, and in 1965 he was captured by CIA aided Bolivian soldiers and executed.

Diego Maradona is known worldwide even by people who are not football fans. It is widely believed that he is the greatest football player of all time. Although not yet historical' it is unlikely that he will ever be forgotten as time goes on. Despite personal battles and controversies with outspokenness, weight gain and drug abuse, he has never lost the tremendous regard of the football world. When he retired he became the coach for the Argentine National Soccer Team up to this year.
