Bugs are a tremendous help to the garden. Without the bees to pollinate flowers there would be absolutely no fruit or vegetables as nothing would be pollinated at all. This is what many people are afraid is going to happen in the future as the number of bees has been decreasing over the last few years. There are ways that people can pollinate their plants themselves by dabbing a brush over the flowers of a plant and spreading the pollen around. Many people have had to do this, this year because the weather was too wet for bees to fly anywhere when the plants needed them to pollinate their flowers.

Sometimes bugs can be a real problem to a gardener. If you have a compost heap that is open to the elements at the bottom of the garden then there is a chance that an ant nest could soon appear in it. The reason for this is that a compost heap is warm inside and provides reasonable protection from the weather, which is why ants will aim to set-up a nest in any compost heap they can access. To get rid of these ants many people have to dispose of the compost as it is infested with them, some people even set fire to their compost heap as it removes any chance of the ants lingering on or returning.

When bugs such as black fly or green fly begin to appear on a tree it will not be long until the entire tree is covered. This can mean that a tree does not produce fruit for the year and could even lose all of the new stems it grew. As a result of this infestation trees can die because they cannot get enough sunlight. What many people do is find ladybugs and put them on their trees with this infestation in order to get rid of it, as ladybugs eat green fly and black fly.

If your garden has a real bug problem and there are lots of them flying around, so much so that you cannot sit outside, then you need a drastic solution. The Venus Fly Trap is a plant that needs to be watered like any other, but it also needs to eat flies and other bugs in order to get the nutrients that most other plants get from soil. These are great as house plants because they eat all of the flies that come in if you have the window open. If you put these outside occasionally they will eat a lot of the flies out there before they get into the house, meaning that there are fewer flies around overall.

Sometimes a bug infestation can be so bad that there is no way that anything natural will be able to get rid of them. A solution for incredibly serious infestations is buying a good bug spray. There are loads of different bug sprays on the market, and it can be especially hard to choose the right one if you need to spray a food producing plant. Generally the brands that are safe for food will kill all bugs so you only need to buy one pack. Making sure you spray the entire infestation is imperative, as some bugs will simply reproduce and cover the tree again if you miss a couple of them.

Looking after plants is a big job because there are so many different ways in which they could be harmed. Bugs are simply one way in which plants are in danger, but birds are also a threat to any food producing plants as they might want to eat whatever the plant produces. Cats and rabbits will also eat not only food producing plants, but other plants as well, and can leave them as nothing but stumps.

Protecting your food producing plants is something that needs to be considered heavily as you are growing them. Often keeping them in a greenhouse will stop most of the dangers that they are exposed to from getting to them, however bugs like slugs and snails are persistent and can smell out the fruit and vegetables. One odd but powerful way of getting rid of these pests is to leave out a bowl of beer or cider. This attracts snails and slugs from a wide area to your garden just so they can drink the alcohol. Once they have had it however, they quickly become drunk and drown in the bowl as they are unable to escape. This means that your plants will be safe and you will have taken out some of the pests for your neighbours as well.
