Crunches are a great exercise to get you started. These work your muscles. Make sure you don't confuse this with sit ups. They are not the same. Crunches are the ones where you only go up half way and not the whole way. Sit-ups can put strain on your neck so crunches are better.

The lower abdominals can be worked with an exercise called leg lifts. Lifting your legs up while keeping them straight and then tipping them back towards your head is how you do this. Obviously you can do both crunches and leg lifts anywhere as you're just using your own body and no equipement.

Then, as you keep working the abdominals, you will need to work the oblique muscles. Now, they will tell you that you don't have to start with these muscles, but they need to be developed at some point. There are some specific exercises you can use to do this.

To truly see your six pack abdominals you will have to burn the layer of fat around them. This means eating to turn your body into a fat burning machine. It also means lifting weights. Changing your eating habits and exercising regularly may seem a lot but it is necessary.

When you do this, you will notice that in due time you will get the abs that you are looking for. Like anything of value, it does take time. So get started because until you do nothing will change.
