Build Greener Data Centres And Pay Very Little Carbon Tax

With the introduction and evolution of computers

, the entire way businesses conduct their business has seen a remarkable change. Long gone are the days when precious information and data were stored in hard copy. Now businesses are ever ready to bank up on the different ways of storing information on the computer and data centres play a very important role in such a situation. Typically a data centre can be defined as a place where businesses store and manage their computer equipments, servers and networks. These data centres provide uninterrupted services which are essential for data storage on computer such as good internet connection, power back up, security in terms of both network and physical as well as man power for technical support and round the clock monitoring of these services. With the ability to store their crucial data safely at a data centre, businesses are able to put their entire effort towards their core business.

Data centres are classified in four tiers which are tier 1, tier 2, tier 3 data centre and tier 4 data centre. This is based on infrastructure functionality. Tier 3 data centre consists of more than one active power and cooling distribution paths. Out of these only one path which is active has redundant components and is maintainable and accounts for providing 99.982% availability. The other data centres have different specifications according to their tier.

All around the world, there are different data centres available for catering to different types of data storage. Australia too has a number of data centres spread all across the country and is a favourite when it comes to clients preference in selecting a data centre location. Because of the amount of carbon being emitted from such large firms, Australia has come up with a set of rules from July 1, 2012. Since data centres are among the largest users of electricity, it is eminent that they will have to cough up a substantial amount of carbon tax and thus should take ample measures to conform to the rules and build centres which will have to pay the minimum amount of carbon tax which is needed to be paid by the data centres.

For building a data centre which has to shell minimum carbon tax, data centres should rethink about their location, design and cooling system to make sure that they have maximum efficiency of power. Steps like making sure to turn off idle equipment and isolating hot air from cold air will make these data centres more cost effective and thus consume lesser power. The carbon tax has already been introduced in Australia and data centres have a lot of rethinking and renovating to do in case they do not want to pay exorbitant amounts of carbon tax. A little thinking out of the box and proper planning will help these data centres not only become greener but also pay lesser carbon tax and thus save up on their profits.
