Digital books are normally published in the PDF format. Ebook store such as Google recently announced they would be using the electronic publishing format or EPUB. This is great that Google in getting more into offering ebooks providing readers more than one million free ebooks to choose from to create their ebook library.

Google which also has an ebook store tackled the challenge of offering all available books in digital form and making them available on the Internet. This is a phenomenal project in which ancient and fragile texts, rare copies of books and single volumes can be accessed by anyone who wants to see them. This also offers protection of the content of these works from being destroyed in natural disasters, arson or theft.

When ebook store such as Google began this project they used the PDF format. The PDF format of ebook are easily downloaded, viewed and read on most computers and portable devices. To create the largest ebook store Google partnered with libraries from all over the world. Google's announcement to include the EPUB format now means that millions of ebooks are available in both the EPUB and PDF formats. EPUB is an ebook reader open standard and similar to PDF. However EPUB is not tied to any certain brand of eReader. One thing to know is that you cannot read an EPUB ebook on Amazon's Kindle unless you use a converter.

Still the EBUP format is a standard format and most eReaders and computers are able to read this format. In fact the standard publisher for ebooks is now the EPUB format. What s the difference between Google ebook in the EPUB format and one in the PDF format? PDF books take actual books and uses images or pictures taken of the pages to create the file. Actually the PDF format is not that easy to read on most eReaders. However, it is a great format to read your ebook library on your computer or even print them out.

The real issue with PDF ebooks is that they cannot be adjusted to easily fit small screens that are in eReaders and phones. The EPUB format is a universal format designed to be used on both eReaders and computers and is easy for both devices to use. Any computer with a recent software version or eReader can use read google ebooks in the EPUB format.

While the EPUB format is great it has not complete replaced the PDF format. Why not? The main reason is that these files are run through an OCR, optical character recognition program. OCR software converts pictures into a digital form. There may be many mistakes that occur in this conversion process unless an editor verifies the accuracy of the information. Also the software from Sony's ebook library will work on a Mac or PC computer.
