Build Your Own Backyard Putting Green

Many golfers dream of having their own backyard putting green

. Improve the short game and take strokes off the handicap; both without leaving the backyard. When reality intrudes, it looks to be a large hassle to create ones very own putting green.

The amount of time devoted to building a backyard putting green is phenomenal. It will be like holding down a second job; part-time or full-time depending on how fast one wants the putting green. And, the daily and weekly maintenance and worry is enough to cause exhaustion if one holds a full time career.

Do you just want to improve your game? Are you an avid green thumb that devotes a lot of time to gardening? Do you want to be the envy of everyone on the block and your golf buddies? These three questions are the biggest factor in deciding. The former could be satisfied by indoor exercises or drills. The middle could be solved with a quality green built and tailored for ones backyard. The latter is possible by building a tournament grade backyard putting green.

Of course there are businesses that will install and build a backyard putting green. But with the sudden popularization of golf, there are now many companies that advertise backyard putting greens built for a fair price. Be careful when shopping around for professional landscape builders. A good price may mean low quality product.

The U.S. Golf Association advises to simply not do it. But if one must, do not follow the USGA specifications of a putting green for the reason of overdoing the solution to your dream. USGA spec courses are designed for heavy traffic, thus the drainage and compaction of turf would have to be accounted for, and more money spent on the green.

The simplest solution may not be the prettiest. It is far cheaper and easier to handle and the game does not change. The result is essentially the very same for a real backyard putting green. Artificial, or synthetic putting greens, made from non-toxic, lead-safe nylon and/or polyethylene yarns up to ISO expectations are a viable solution to ones dream. This may sound like product placement, but for the purposes of simultaneously improving ones game and getting out of the house, an artificial backyard putting green can be the easiest solution.

The turf will never need tending; it will not need complicated drainage systems or much construction of any kind. There will be no worry of turf disease, insects, weed or fertility. If one is an inexperienced agronomist, it would be a great challenge doing the research into building ones own backyard putting green. With no experience at all, one can install an artificial green and only need to worry about improving ones game.

From an environmental perspective, this is a really good replacement. There is no damage to the earth from creating the backyard putting green. There will be no emissions from a mower. In fact, no need for an expensive, golf-course quality mower at all. The water alone saved from use on a traditional, bent grass putting green is good for the environment and the utilities bill.
