Building A Disabled Bathroom Suite
We all know that life can deal some tough blows and we can never prepare for these events
. One such instance is when you are purchasing yur new home, you never ever consider access in the event of disability or another type of impairment. When disaster strikes you may suddenly find that your home is more of an obstacle course than the place you know as a secure and safe place.
If you are in the unfortunate position that you are whellchair bound, either permanently or even temporarily you will soon find that doorways are too narrow, the stairs are impossible and your bathroom has been designed in such a way that usual hygeine routines are impossible.
Bathing may well be completely off the cards, just because the physical act of getting into the bath tub is no longer an option. Consider your shower as an option, even though you may not be able to stand there is the option of adding a seat to your showering enclosure.
There are shower trays available that are adapted to accept a disability chair but it is more often that the shower is fitted with a folding chair underneath the shower head. The person in the disablility chair is then transfered from the chair into the shower seat and is able to shower as normal.
Depending on the size of the enclosure it may be that you need to adjust the opening, I would recommend that a minimum of thirty six inches is required for access and a turning circle of around sixty inches. These measurements should be sufficient but it is always best to double check the measurements yourself.
These enhancements can be done without much work and alteration to the main structure of the bathroom, however if the disability is more permanent the you may need to look at a more radical overhaul of the entire bathroom.
Doing this will make life just a little more comfortable for the person with the injury and this could make all the difference for a speedy recovery or perhaps just to increase the quality of life for the person.
I recently carried out such a renovation in a bathroom for an elderly person and it has given them back a sense of independence whereas before they were completely dependant upon home care visits. I think it is important to make considerations for not only ourselves but for relatives and clients when planning and making arrangements for a new bathroom suites.
