Building A Log Store
Log stores are simple to build, they generally have five panels and a waterproof material for the roof. There is a rear panel, a base, a roof and two sides. The timber used for a log store should be tanalized to ensure it is protected from the elements and the screws or nails which fasten each panel should be galvanised to prevent them from rusting.
When your log store arrives it will be in flatpack form and need to be built. To make building your log store easier, assembly instructions should be provided.
Obviously like anythingmoney plays a large part in the quality of a log store. As a rule of thumb the more they cost the better they are and the longerthey'll last.
Each of the panels is made of a timber framewhich is then covered in wood cladding. The cladding will have gaps between each length, this allowsair to circulatebetweenyour logs.Theroof section will be made the same way but with no gaps in the cladding. All this framework and cladding will come pre-assembled, either screwed or nailed together.
Fitting the panels of your log store together is a simple task. The back and side panels should have pre-drilled holes for screwing them together. All you need to do is start by slotting the base andeither of the sides together, align the holes and screw together. Now fix the other side in the same way, but be careful, the existing joints have very little strength until the rear panel is in place.Next position the back panel, making sure that you don't stretch the existing joints, line up the holes and screw together. There will also be pilot holes in both of the sides and the bottom of the rear panel which will allow you to screw it to the side panels and the base.
Your log store should now be nearly ready with only a couple of things left to do. The next step is to attach the roof, so again place the roof in position and use the pilot holes to align and then fix the roof in place.
The final step is covering the roof with a waterproof material. This material is 9 times out of 10, isfelt. Finishing your log store should be no problem, because the felt is easy to work with. The felt will be approximately cut to size, so all you need to do is place the felt on your roof making sure it overlaps on all sides. Then nail the felt to the front edge of the roof with the clout nails, then do the same at the rear of the log store by stretching it as tight as possible first then nailing it down. Repeat this step for both sides of the roof. To give your log store a quality finish, nail the two facsia boards to both sides of the roof.
