Building An Above Ground Extension

It is always difficult to decide whether you want to extend the existing building

of your house or want to move in to another house, if you outgrow your house. Moving in a new home may seem easier, but extension will add value to your existing home as well as space. Building an extension will definitely gives you what you want exactly.

But building an extension is not a simple task, especially an above ground extension. You have to keep all the aspects in mind ecological or primary or secondary etc. the best part is how you can enhance the existing building with new extension. Anything which is built without any beforehand preparation and design would be nothing just a structure which intrude where it should have not been and covering more space than required.

Some considerations are given here which should be kept in mind before designing an extension:

-Any extension which is built on the north can be helpful to enhance the insulation of the walls and windows facing north.

-If the roof of your house is sloping down towards the north, any extension in that direct will reduce the amount of shading towards the ground. As the line of the roof continue to travel toward the ground with the introduction of an extension. This amount of shading can further be reduced by raising the ground around at the back of the house. This phenomenon is usually called as berming.

-You can make the best use of passive solar gains with an extension built on south. What you need is to use the glazing material used for sun rooms or conservatory. In this case extension is planned to reduce the heat load on the building instead of increasing it.

-To have a consolidating effect on the over all building of the house, you can built an extension by glazing over a space between walls.

It is important to have a close observation before designing an extension. Any above ground extension should have the strength to block or hold the powerful wind from entrance. Its external features and shadow range on the neighboring buildings should also be calculated.

It is worth mention here that you can extend from first or second floor without even affecting the external ground. Though, resources are limited but there are ways to extend the building, for instance, you can build a light weight cantilevered structure at the enclosed balcony or at first floor easily. This method was common in the past and is known as oriel window. Oriel windows have all the properties of sun room and greenhouse.

Dormer windows are another form of extension. They are usually set into the dormer and therefore are more useful to give attic more space and headroom. These windows also serve as the purpose of sunrooms or conservatories.

Careful consideration is required on the behalf of oriel windows that how can they be used as an extension without pampering its nature too much.
