Building Bridges: Forming Bonds With Team Members
Creating a great team is an iterative process
, and one that doesnt come easily. Youre taking people from different backgrounds and often different levels of experience, with the only commonality being that they have some kind of functional expertise thats invaluable to your project. Thats great, but how do you get them to function well as a team?
To create a bonded team that works well together, its critical to start by laying a strong foundation. First, define the purpose of the team and what its goals are, and get input from all the different members of the team. You might be surprised at just how different the answers are! Clearly, in order to be a team in the truest sense of the word, everyone must be working towards a common goal and have the same perspective as to what itll take to achieve that goal or goals.
To continue along this vein, find out what the thought processes are for each member as to how he or she operates within a team structure, and what the expectations are for this particular team. The best way to do this is through a brief survey that will generate data around how the team will function and interact. Topics that revolve around commitment, communication, and conflict resolution should also be included. No, everyone doesnt have to have the same viewpoint on all of these different aspects, but its helpful for the team as a whole to understand that there may be different operational styles on the team, and that a workaround should be implemented so that things can progress according to plan and with minimal disruption and disagreement.
After these basic precepts have been satisfied, its important to delve deeper during the teamwork process itself in order to keep everything on an even keel. This means assessing periodically to see how different behavioral styles are meshing. It also means acting proactively, if it looks like difficulties are beginning to arise. Make sure that each team member knows what everyone elses preferences are so that there can be some level of adaptation. By taking into account other team members working styles, a bond will form because of this deeper level of understanding.
Finally, its important to include teambuilding exercises that have nothing to do with the project at hand, but that are simply a way for team members to get together and enjoy each others company as they learn more about their cohorts. This can be as simple as going out to dinner together, but can also include other excursions around common interests. Along these lines, make sure to celebrate milestones together, whether these are individual birthdays, or just the successful completion of another phase of the project. By ensuring that team members feel that theyre all in this together, only then can true bonding be present.
