Building Relationships Is The Key To Successful Fundraising

In order to run a successful not-for-profit organization

, it is imperative that you have a steady stream of funding coming in. While you can go out and constantly work to solicit new donors in order to get the funding you need, this can be an extremely time consuming process and it may not be fruitful depending upon how widespread the appeal of your cause is. A better option is to rely, at least in part, on your existing donors who you can count on to contribute to your efforts. By both maintaining relationships with a solid donor base and expanding to find new potential sources of funding, you can help to make sure that your nonprofit organization never runs short of the funds it needs to do your important work.

Getting a donation from an existing donor who has already shown that he or she is willing to support you can be a simpler and easier process than finding a new donor and convincing the new donor to give you money. However, if you want to rely on your existing donors to keep giving, you will need to make sure that you keep them happy and you will need to make sure you maintain a strong relationship.

There are a lot of different ways to build relationships with donors, but most of them center around communicating regularly and recognizing them for their efforts. This means you dont want to send your donors only solicitation requests for money at periodic intervals, but that you also want to send them other correspondence that recognizes their efforts and keeps them in the loop.

For example, donors who make donations- especially large ones- should be thanked for their contribution. In some cases, when possible, it may even be helpful to give the donors details about what exactly their money helped to fund. For larger donors, especially, taking the time to inform them of how their money was spent and what concrete goals it accomplished can make the donor feel as if the gift was money well spent.

Donors and potential donors may also like to receive periodic news about what your organization, in general, is doing. This will help them to see that you are always working towards a cause and will also keep the name of your organization fresh in their mind if they do decide to do some giving.

These types of regular communication can be the key to building lasting relationships and turning donors into repeat donors. However, it is also a good idea to communicate with donors who have given money in the past and who might again in the future if they are asked. Donors who have made previous gifts but who have not given for a long time are called lapsed donors. Getting back into contact with the lapsed donors- especially with details that might interest them-can get them back to being active donors again.

Unfortunately, knowing who to communicate with and when, and keeping track of all of your communication efforts, can be time consuming and complicated- so relationship building takes time.
