It never ceases to amaze me that the internet marketing dream' is still often sold as a business which involves very little work and which can be done from the beach or the side of a luxury hotel pool.However anyone who actually embarks on a career of internet marketing soon discovers that the image of the marketer sipping a cocktail on a sun-kissed beach while the laptop displays all the money pouring into the bank account is something of a myth.The reality is hard work, more hard work, relentless competition and constantly trying to establish yourself as being better than your rivals in the marketplace.Those who have bought products which promise easy money for little effort soon discover that the dreams of fast cash and fast cars are soon shattered as the reality of internet marketing hits home.

Establishing yourself as an internet marketer is never as easy as just throwing up a website and waiting for the customers to fall over themselves to buy your product. A non-stop campaign of promotion and marketing just to drive traffic to your website or squeeze page is a far more realistic description of what lies ahead.

As the internet itself is ever-changing so too are the strategies to get traffic and what worked well six or even three months ago may not be so successful now. This means that the internet marketer must really stay at the top of his game and keep up with developments within the industry.

It can never do any harm to regularly review your own website to ensure that remains right for your needs. While you certainly don't want to constantly change it to reflect every passing fad which comes along, you might want to consider adding new features over time, especially if they can be shown to improve sales performance.

Also make it a golden rule of your business to check out your competition on a regular basis and see exactly what they are up to.You want to be the best, with the hottest products and the highest rankings in the search engines but then again so do your rivals. Just because you are ahead in the rankings in January does not mean that you will still be there in March so never allow complacency to set in.

Check out the other sites around you in the search engine results and try and discover why they may be placed higher or lower than you. Software tools will allow you to determine where your rivals are getting their backlinks and if your backlinks are not as good then it is time to do something about it.

If your main rival's site looks better than yours then maybe it is time to overhaul your product but don't just embark on a new look for the sake of it. The products you offer, your reputation within your niche and the level of service you provide to your customers may all be more important than just how flash your website looks. However if everything else is in order but your site is disorganized and haphazard then it may be much more important to give it a decent makeover.

Finally ask yourself whether you have an effective overall strategy for your business and a plan for accurately measuring results.If there is no strategy to drive your business forward and meet new challenges then it will simply flounder while if you don't measure results then you may well spend most of your time focusing on the wrong things.

Get all these things right and one day you might, just might, be able to relax by the five-star hotel's outdoor pool with that cocktail in your hand while the money floods into your bank account on autopilot.
