What's the best way to build a website? I've been online since 1996 and have used just about every method imaginable to build a website, and I have to say that hands down I recommend using WordPress free open source blogging software to build your website.

Why WordPress? Because WordPress has some pretty impressive options and features that make it a great choice.

1. WordPress is free to install and use- Unlike some of the other services like Big Cartel, you can install and use WordPress to build your website for free. While you still have to pay for the hosting account, you can get good reliable hosting for $12 or less per month.

Plus, there are a lot of hosting services that allow you to run more than one website on one account. Since WordPress is free, you can use multiple installations of WordPress to run multiple websites all for the same $12 or less per month. If you need to run more than one website this is a big plus.

2. WordPress is easy to use and maintain- If you can type in some boxes and press some buttons, you can use WordPress. There are a lot of free open source software out there like Zen Cart or Joomla or osCommerce that you can use to build your website. I have used all of them for a number of websites and I can safely say that WordPress is the easiest to install, set up, and use. If you're a beginner or even if you have some experience you'll appreciate the fact that WordPress is one of the most intuitive and easy to use website building software available.

3. WordPress is flexible- While WordPress was primarily created run blogs, it can be used for so much more. In addition to blogging, you can also use WordPress to create:

a website

a website with a blog

an ecommerce site

an online portfolio

a membership site

an online directory

a social networking site

an online magazine

and pretty much anything else you can think about

If you need a website that's flexible enough to do a variety of things, then WordPress definitely fits the bill.

4. You don't need to know graphic design to use WordPress- There are a ton of professional looking, pre-made designs called "themes" in which you can use to create the look for your WordPress website or blog. While you do have to pay for what's called a "premium" theme, there are literally hundreds of themes out there that are completely free to use.

There are even some themes that allow you to easily customize the look of the theme yourself, so you can specify your own backgrounds, font colors, font families and other design elements. And if you don't like the look of one theme, you can easily swap it out for another one and change the look of your entire website in a matter of minutes!

So there you have it! If you want to build your own website that's low cost, easy to use and maintain yourself, you can't go wrong by using WordPress.
