Building a Dream with American Dream Scholarship

This means only a rough 40% will have the opportunity to higher education

, a number bound to get lower as some are bound to stop before graduation. This number was rooted from the mere 50% of African-American men who graduated high school all over the US.

Some believe these are societal issues and not educational ones while others believe it is simply an ongoing trend. Whatever the case, something has to be done and somebody has to take action. One organization just did. The American Dream Scholarship is a financial assistance program that gives denominations of $500 to $5,000 to African-American men who decide to enroll in a post-secondary, 2 to 4 year college course, a vocational or technical school.

It is sponsored by the Sallie Mae Fund in partnership with the United Negro College Fund, Inc. (UNCF). The fund allocates almost $3 Billion a year for private scholarships. It has since provided financial assistance to 6,350 students since 2001.

As with any scholarship, the American Dream Scholarship has requirements. The scholar must be a US Citizen or permanent residents of the US. The students must have a minimum 2.5% GPA. The student must also pass the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. Furthermore, he must pass verification done by the University financial aid office that he does indeed the said scholarship. As for the school chosen, the school or institution he is planning to go to must be accredited institutions and must be found within the United States or Puerto Rico.

Scholarship grant is open to all fulltime College Freshmen to seniors as well as High school graduates or High school seniors.

The deadline for this year is set on October 25, 2010. Applicants will have to write an essay answering the question What is my American Dream?' All applications must be submitted online with the answer to the essay question attached.

Here's an institution that just provided a small step to a big dream. All the rest is up to the individual.
