Bull By The Horns - Bull Temple

Climb up the shaded walkway on Bugle Rock to visit the Bull Temple in Bangalore

. Built by the founder of Bangalore city Kempe Gowda in the mid 16th century the temple, now amidst the waterfalls, fountains and trees of Bugle Rock Park, is dedicated to the worship of Nandi the bull, Shiva's main mode of transport and his chief disciple. The small temple built in the Vijayanagara architectural style comprises of a tower which was an add on in the early 20th century, featuring Shaiva decorations, a porch and a narrow pillared hall with a sanctum in which the third largest granite statue of the seated Nandi in India is to be found on a plinth. The statue, carved from a single piece of rock, has been rubbed with charcoal and anointed with oil by devotees over several centuries giving it a dark hue. The temple premises also contain several ancient sculptures of other deities. According to tradition the statue has a small iron plate on its head to prevent the bull from growing any further.

Every year on the last Monday and Tuesday of the Hindu month of Karthika (November) a ground nut fair is held in the temple premises and offerings are made to the bull statue. The origin of the fair lies in the ancient tale of a bull having to be appeased to prevent it from eating up groundnut cultivations. So while the festival and offerings are to ensure good harvests, it is also to appease the bull. Another interesting anecdote is the belief that the origins of the Vishva Bharti River is under the bull statue.
