Bull Temple Revering The Sacred Vehicle Of Lord Shiva

The Bull Temple was built following the Dravidian style, a traditional architecture with roots running back for thousands of years in India. Breathtaking intricate carvings adorning step pyramid like structure is its most conspicuous feature. But at the Bull Temple you will find something even more amazing. That is an image of a gigantic black bull about four and half metres in height and six metres in length.

This colossal statue is embellished with relief carvings and contrastingly adorned with bright yellow garlands. The temple is considered one of the oldest temples in Bangalore. The image of the bull has been carved from a single rock and stands today as a fine Dravidian monolith of Bangalore. Flanking the Nandi Bull statue are two images of god Surya and goddess Chandra mounted on chariots.

There is an interesting tale behind the construction of this temple, as it was built to stop a ravenous bull from destroying groundnut and peanut crops. And surprisingly the legend goes to say that after the temple was built the bull stopped invading the crops, and so the locals continued to pay homage to the temple.

Bull Temple also nestles a Ganesh temple, where you will find a lofty image of the deity built with 110 kilograms of butter. Amazingly the butter doesnt melt and after four years portions of this butter is given to the devotees as prashada or Gods food. The premises also hosts an annual celebration along with a widely popular groundnut fair called Kadalekayi Parishe. And continuing their gratitude the local farmers also offer their very first crops to the Bull Temple.
