Burgos is just 2 hours 45 minutes drive from Madrid and it can offer builders a change of pace, scenery and exotic food. Burgos is also a little different and it's whether. Though it is not very far off from Madrid, it is at a much higher elevation and provides city dwellers and visitors with an escape from pompous summer heat or an extremely cold weather.

Burgos, Spain: A Brief History

Burgos was founded by Christian Spain in the 884 after centuries of Roman, Celtic, Moorish and Visigoth control. Since it had been an important trade center, Burgos was made the Kingdom of Castile during the 11th century. Burgos has also played a very important role in Napoleon's Peninsular Wars during the 19th century, this Spanish Civil War in 1930s and also during the Carlist Civil War during mid 19th century.

Burgos Cathedral


The Gothic cathedral of Burgos is dedicated to Virgin Mary and is considered one of the greatest treasures of Spain. The construction of this must-see treasure began in 1221 after the demolishing of a Roman cathedral that was built on the same site. The construction of this wonder continued for more than five centuries and it reflects taste of French, Spanish and German architecture. In 1984, this cathedral was acknowledged to be a UNESCO world heritage site.

The residents of Burgos are very proud of the city being the birthplace of the famous Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, better known as El Cid. This Spanish hero has been admired for the military leadership he had while Spanish were on war against the Moors.

The Monastery of Royal Retreats

The monastery of Burgos was once a site that was used for Royal relaxation and later it was converted into a convent in the year 1187. Visitors can see the tombs of King Alfonso VIII and also his wife. Museo de Ricas Telas and Eleanor of Aquitaine boasts of having a splendid collection of the Royal garments used by these people.

El Camino de Santiago de Compostela is a route of an ancient Catholic pilgrimmage that runs through Burgos.

Gastronomy of Burgos

Burgos is very best known for its morcilla, which is famous by the names 'black pudding' or blood sausage. Morcilla is actually a mix of onion, rise and congealed pigs blood that is spiced with red pepper and then cooked in salted water.

All these things and more make Burgos an ideal destination to spend a weekend.
