Burlesque And The Return Of Classy Lingerie

Burlesque And The Return Of Classy Lingerie

One of the most talked-about trends to shake the global nightlife scene in the past decade has been the rise, or rather resurrection, of burlesque as a popular art form. The classy and suggestive performance style that was overtaken by seedy strip clubs in the 1930s has returned in full force to reclaim the power of female sexuality and inspire the wardrobe choices of modern women looking to try out their own dance moves at home.

It may be ironic that what was once a staple of pre-Depression America should enjoy a new lease of popularity in the current economic crisis, but there's more at play in the return of burlesque than just a shallow nostalgia for the past.

Modern burlesque pioneers such as Ute Hanna were consciously rebelling against what they perceived as the over-sexualised and undeniably male-oriented phenomenon of strip clubs plaguing the streets of every major city, longing for a time when female dancing could once again be more flirtatious than raunchy.

Although consciously tamer than its more highly-sexed equivalents, burlesque dancing is a chance for performers to really shine in what they do, and its inspiring and universal nature is most evident in the mixed sex audiences that attend today's burlesque shows, which are usually attended by more women than men.

Like many fast-catching trends, 'neo-burlesque' began in New York City and has gradually spread to other international cities to form a major part of their nightlife.

Of course, we can't be certain whether this modern view of burlesque as a tame form of play-acting is the same one that was held in the Roaring Twenties, or if that's a view engendered by direct contrast to our over-sexed 21st century. The path of women's liberation was a long and rocky one that some would say is far from complete, and by reclaiming sensual dancing from the seedy establishments, today's women can feel proud of their bodies.

The overriding message of burlesque is that being sexy is a positive trait that women should be proud of, and it's trends such as burlesque fashion that are helping lingerie become a common feature of many women's clothes cabinets. Whether it's for putting on a show for their partners in the bedroom or just for feeling secretly sexy underneath their everyday outfits, designer lingerie lets women take control of their sexuality and the ways in which they are perceived by both sexes.
