It seems like magic, but it's actually the result of your deliberate and consistent effort to build and maintain positive relationships.

Today it's easier than ever to shop around for a slightly better price or marginally better terms. This makes building strong relationships more important than ever. When your business and referral partners, your clients, your employees, and everyone you interact with, feels you genuinely care about their well-being, those relationships will make your transactions smoother and minimize conflict. Don't you usually give a friend the benefit of the doubt, or buy something from them just because they are your friend? You want your behavior to show the people you work with that they are your friends.

Here are 10 easy ways to demonstrate your genuine interest in your business and referral partners as individuals, rather than as cogs in your wheel.

Thank them often and in different ways. Thank them for things you both consider routine. Send them a greeting card, send a small gift, or call them just to express your appreciation.

Take an interest in their life. If they have a newsletter, subscribe, read it (or ask your assistant to), and give positive feedback. If they write a blog, subscribe to it, read it, and make a positive comment. If they are on social media, connect with them, follow their posts, and comment occasionally.

Remember the important occasions in their life. Send a birthday card and a couple of holiday cards each year. When you become aware that his son is graduating or her daughter had a baby, acknowledge it in some personal way.

If they are involved in fund raising for a cause you can support, contribute financially and ask them to share with you why they support this cause. The more near and dear it is to their heart, the more they will appreciate that you took an interest.
