Many Mums struggle to look after themselves once children come along. Gone are the spa days and endless beauty regimes. A healthy lifestyle is consigned to the past.

However, skin specialist Liz Earle believes a busy life should not lead to you neglecting your health.

She has a list of Top Ten Lifestyle and Skin Detox Tips to help any stressed Mummy.

1. Keep it simple - I always find it much easier to add things into my routine, simple things, rather than give things up and then feel guilty when I fall off the wagon again. You get to the beginning of the year and you start feeling guilty because you've over indulged and you put yourself under added pressure to try and get slim and detox.

2. One goal - We set ourselves too many goals at one time. Let's cut out sugar, let's go to the gym every day, let's cut out caffeine and those targets are too much and I think when you fail it's easy to say, let's forget it. Set yourself achievable goals.

3. Increase fluids We all know we should be doing it but I don't know many people who are managing the full two litres a day, every day. I keep a jug of water in the kitchen, keep another one on my desk and I try and make sure that I finish the jug by the end of the day. It's a visual reminder.

4. A bit of what you fancy - Wine, especially red wine is full of anti oxidants, which is a healthy thing, I wouldn't recommend knocking back the spirits but actually, a glass of wine in the evening is no bad thing.

5. Skin detox - Something like dry skin body brushing is a great way to re-energise your body and help with flabby areas. It's very good on cellulite actually, on the hips and thighs. All you need is a natural bristle brush, like an oversized nail brush. Start with the soles of the feet and work your way up the body, literally brushing the skin in long, sweeping movements. What you're doing is whizzing away all those dead skin cells and you are speeding up the circulation and you're encouraging the lymphatic system to move more effectively. A lot of the junk which is in the body is secreted through the skin.

6. Good cleanser - Don't use anything that foams on your face because it can really dry the skin, use something creamy and try a muslin cloth. It's really fast so you don't need to use a separate eye make-up remover. You just massage the cream into the skin and you use a muslin cloth, ring it out into some warm water and what you're doing with the cloth is exfoliating the skin. You look instantly more radiant.


7. Moisturise your skin - I don't have time to do complicated, lengthy regimes in the bathroom. If you're buying a moisturiser choose one that's rich in plant oils.

8. Liquid iron supplements - A great way to restore energy levels. A lot of women in this country are iron deficient. If we don't have enough absorbable iron it makes us feel very tired.

9. B Vitamins - I think the B vitamins are also very useful. They're very good for the nervous system. By taking these small steps we can look better and feel better.
