Butchers Bill - "Quick And Painful", 2003 - Album review

NYC's BUTCHERS BILL make it sound easy. Check out "3AM", a track that stimulates the same chemicals in the brain as THE CULT's "Bad Fun" from the "Electric" album. Hard-panned guitars that swirl from the left to right channel courtesy of axemen Patrick and Andy will make your jaw drop as they treat your ears track after track to cyclonic six-string paradise, heavily influenced by your favorite Angus or Ace moments. "Saturday [Full and Empty]" keeps bringing me back with a riff that reminds me of "Suzy is a Headbanger", but peppered with molten wah-wah leads. There's this part at the end of the song where he hits the pedal for the lead tone, but plays the main riff through it. I just keep backing it up - it's spectacular.

I could do a track-by-track review, but the same point would be emphasized in each passage. Great songs, a brick-through-the-window guitar tone, solos that grab onto your leg and don't let go, and an amazing "live" sounding production. This is great confirmation. The HELLACOPTERS and SUPERSUCKERS need to get a load of this CD so that they can re-discover their roots. This is what it's all about folks. We're not crazy. These kind of bands are still out there, and there is no reason to settle for shit like KINGS OF LEON or JET. Somebody, come take this from me.

Butchers Bill - "Love Killer", 2006 - Album review

Upon doing some research, it appears that the phrase "butchers bill" is a slang term for the death tally in a war. With all that's going on in the world, do we really need another reminder of the horror of war? Well, ironically enough, the music of the band BUTCHERS BILL provides the perfect distraction for a war-weary, rock-hungry nation to wipe the gloomy haze from their eyes. "Love Killer" is filled with classic, no frills fare a la vintage AC/DC, the STOOGES, MC5 and all the good stuff that ardent peacedog disciples around the world have come to hunger for.

BUTCHERS BILL was formed in Croatia back in 1992, before closing up shop and moving to New York City around '97. This move probably had a lot to do with the development of their authentically dirty, punked up sound. "Love Killer" is their second release, and while it doesn't really offer anything particularly new or earth-shattering, it does give the listener more than his/her daily quotient of raw, fun, rock n' roll. The rhythm section is laid back and smooth, grooving effortlessly on tracks like "Go To Hell" and "Roll Over," the latter featuring some sweet THIN LIZZY style axework from guitarists Patrik Tekovic and Andy Scopaz. The punk explosion of "Go Bitch!" is a welcome foot-tapper. There's nary a clunker to be found on this platter.

There is enough indie flavor present in BUTCHERS BILL's tunes to appeal to more than just the average rock n' roll shut-in. The band even shares some common ground with current day mainstream-friendly rock revivalists like JET (check out the track "Girls Are Mean" for the clearest example). If they were to smooth over some of their rough edges just a tad and get the proper representation, BUTCHERS BILL might find themselves up to their necks in major label scratch while pulling a train on Paris Hilton. We can hope that the lure of fame, riches, and HIVed up celebutards will not sway the boys. It would be a pity to see them added to the death toll in that OTHER ongoing war: the war against lame crap. We'll keep all available digits crossed, but until then, this is one bill that will be paid happily.
