First rule of buying gold is don't talk about buying gold. I know, Fight Club is more catchy, but it doesn't apply here. The biggest mistake anyone can make when they've made a good buy is to blab about to everyone around them. The chat channels are constantly monitored by GMs (mods, whatever. same job, different title) who take extreme delight in snagging the fools who shout about their buys. Normally, they're mostly concerned with powerlevelers and cheaters, but they won't hesitate to nail one of us if they make it that easy. Also, don't PM about it with strangers. A lot of them will happily turn you in to the GMs for the credibility it lends them.

Another mistake that rookies like to make is to buy as much as they can all at once. You need to fly under the radar with this, or they'll catch on just as quick. It just looks suspicious to have a level 5 running around with over a billion gold in his pockets. Especially if his account didn't show that 24 hours prior. Keep it in moderation. A little bit here, a little bit there, that no one pays attention to. That could be a gift from a higher level friend to help you out. No one I know is 1 billion gold friendly, however.

Finally, use a little common sense. Watch out for sites that wont' protect your interests as a gamer and consumer. If they aren't taking care, then you'll get busted just as easily as if you'd shouted it out to the world.
