Buy Your First Guitar - What Is Important For A Beginner
?
Many of us are a little fortunate when we decide to learn to play guitar. Someone near you like a brother or sister, or another relative can dig up a guitar from somewhere in the basement that you can borrow. A set of new strings and a little polish, and it's as good as new.
But everyone is not that lucky. We have to get out there and find ourselves a new guitar to buy. Or maybe a used one.
When I was young I had to be very careful when I was going to buy my first guitar. The quality of many of the cheapest guitar brands was not good enough. So in my case, I had to bring my friend's dad as guide.
Today though, the lower priced guitars aren't near as bad as they used to be. Just check the height of the strings on the guitar. If it's not high enough above the fret it will get "noisy" when you play. On the other hand, if it's too high you may face difficulties playing it instead. Try some chords, and you will probably hear if it's not ok.
Some guitar bodies are made of plywood. But don't let that scare you. It's not a bad thing, and since it's your first guitar it doesn't really matter. They are not very expensive and they can stand against punishment a lot better than guitars made of solid wood.
So what do you need to think of?
I have already mentioned the height of the strings. But there are a few other things you want to consider, when you go to the guitar store.
*Don't buy your very first guitar from an online store. Surely you can find excellent quality as well as cheap guitars - sometimes both in the same guitar - but there is one big disadvantage in that; the feeling for the guitar. You need to touch it, hold it, feel it, listen to it. So if you don't know exactly what you want, go to a guitar store.
*Sit down with the guitar you are interested in. Just hold it. If you know how, play some chords and listen to its sound. If you can't play, ask someone in the store to help you.
*Check the width of the neck - are your hands to small? Are the guitar itself the right size for your body? Does it feel comfortable in you hands?
*The most important thing for you is that it feels good for you, that you like the sound of the guitar, and that you find it easy to press down the strings. Or, at least, not difficult.
* All in all, you don't really have to worry so much, when you buy your first guitar. It is later on, when you feel that you have grown and need to upgrade to The guitar - that's when you really should be picky.
