Buying A Home- Where Should You Live?

Buying A Home- Where Should You Live?

Buying A Home- Where Should You Live?

When it comes to buying a home, there is no shortage of options. You have homes, townhomes, condominiums, duplexes, apartments, trailers, double wides, modular homes, high rises, low rises, apartment complexes, rental homes, lease to purchase, etc. You can live in the city, the country, the suburbs, the beach, lakefront, mountains, valleys, subdivisions, dirt roads, ranches, wheverever your heart desires and your budget allows.

So what is right for you? Buying a home is the largest purchase you will ever make, so you have to make sure that you like where you are going. Contrary to popular belief, it isn't that easy.

I grew up in a small southern town, moving to Atlanta, GA in my early twenties. While life in the big city was exciting, it quickly wore off and I found myself longing for the slower pace of a smaller town. I have adjusted my goals accordingly.

You have to decide if the glitz and rat race of city life is for you, or if you are more content in a laid back setting. Some people prefer apartments to houses, and vice versa. Again, I was completely sold on the idea of a townhome until I lived in an apartment for a few months. The townhome idea was attractive because there was no yard work involved. Unfortunately, the idea of living in such close proximity to so many other people was even less appealing, and I wound up making an offer on a free standing home with a very small yard.

Cutting it down, you should look for a home in a community that best allows you to live your daily life, convenient to work, your kids' schools, shopping, or cultural activities. If you want off the beaten path, looking at homes inside a given metro area isn't going to yield much in the way of results.

You should determine not only where you want to live, but the type of home, as well as the price range you are comfortable looking in. You can then begin to narrow down your choices from there.

You'll also want to consider aspects such as the quality of the schools in the area you have chosen (this is easily done by contacting your local city or county school board). Your real estate agent may also be very familiar with the schools in the area.

Don't forget about the property's tax liability. The total amount of the previous year's property taxes is usually included in the listing information. If it's not, the seller can provide a tax receipt or contact the local tax assessor's office. Remember that tax rates can change from year to year.

In that same vein, your mortgage and real estate taxes will be deductible. Be sure to talk to your agent about all the tax benefits available to you as a homeowner.

Clearly there are a number of elements to take into consideration when deciding where you will live. Your real estate agent will be the best source to work with you and help you find the home and location that best serves your needs and wants. Good luck and happy house hunting!
