Buying A Spo2 Monitor For Home Use

There are many things in this world which cause distress and anxiety to a person but the worst one has to be having a child who is sick

. There are few feelings which compare to the despair a parent feels when they have to see their child in pain, or know that they are suffering. A person will do anything to help that child get better and feel comfortable and it has been proven that a child will feel more at ease in his or her home than in a hospital setting. This is why there are now portable devices to monitor certain things, such as a Spo2 monitor which monitors the level of oxygen carried in the red blood cells.

This is used to detect certain things such as heart defects and to check the flow of the oxygenated blood around the body, and the process is non invasive and completely pain free. The results are recorded and then the doctors will analyse these results to check for problems and see about the next course of action. The process is called pulse oximetry and has been used for many years, with very good results. Now here comes the technical bit which sounds a lot more confusing than it actually is.

HOW PULSE OXIMETRY WORKS

Before the advent of pulse oximetry, arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) was measured directly using blood gas analysis. Now that it's measured indirectly using pulse oximetry, it's referred to as SpO2. Pulse oximetry uses a sensor (sometimes called a probe) and a monitoring unit that analyses the data and displays the results. The sensor directs light at two wavelengths-red and infrared-through a pulsating capillary bed at a site (often a finger, but the forehead, an earlobe, or a toe can also be used) and detects how much is absorbed.

Oxygenated blood absorbs light at 660nm (red light), whereas deoxygenated blood absorbs light preferentially at 940nm (infra-red). Pulse oximeters consist of two light emitting diodes, at 600nm and 940nm, and two light collecting sensors, which measure the amount of red and infra-red light emerging from tissues traversed by the light rays. The relative absorption of light by oxyhemoglobin (HbO) and deoxyhemoglobin is processed by the device and an oxygen saturation level is reported.

Features which are useful

Integrated with SpO2 probe and processing display module

Small in volume, light in weight and convenient in carrying

Operation of the product is simple, low power consumption

SpO2 value display

Pulse rate value display, bar graph display

Pulse waveform display

Display mode can be changed

Measured data overruns limits and low-voltage alarm function

When you are selecting a Spo2 monitor, you need to remember that you do not need to buy the most expensive one to get the best results. Some monitors have many additional features which are not necessary and which will increase the price. Stick with your budget and as long as you follow the instructions carefully, you should have no problems with using it and recording information.
