Buying Safe and Appropriate Nursery Furniture

When shopping for modern nursery furniture, it is important to keep a few things in mind. Budget issues may be a consideration as well as the size of the room the furniture will go in. Like anything else, prices for nursery furniture can vary. Economy cribs can run anywhere from $100-$150; mid-priced cribs from about $150-$450 with higher end cribs sometimes running into the thousands. A crib mattress will also need to be purchased which ranges anywhere from $30 to $250. Cribs are usually made from wood, plastic, steel or sometimes brass. Some come with a drop side on only one-side, a drop side on both sides, with some offering no drop side at all. Some parents prefer no drop sides because of perceived safety issues.

Since most nurseries are furnished while the mother is still expecting, they may not know the sex of the child yet. It is usually recommended that the expectant parents begin decorating the room in the second trimester to leave plenty of time before the baby arrives. In addition, it spares the mother-to-be any undue stress and work during the more exhausting third trimester. In the cases where the future parents do not know the sex of the child, it is important that the expectant parents pick out a "neutral" arrangement in these cases. Both parents should experience the joys of picking out a baby's room. Beyond the joyful aspects, it can also prevent any future disagreements over the choice of furniture bought.

In the case of first time parents, the furniture picking experience is a time to get used to adjustments of parenthood. Safety is an important consideration with any child's furniture and none more so then in a baby's room. Only furniture that conforms to the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) safety standards as well as those from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) should be considered. Nearly all baby furniture does comply, but these standards are voluntary and there are occasional alerts about foreign manufactured cribs that skirt these standards.

If buying a used crib, buy only one manufactured after 1999. That was the latest update to the JPMA and ASTM standards. Dressers will be used longer than cribs and should be thought of as a long term purchase. Again, if the sex of the child is not known, the baby's dresser should be appropriate for both boys and girls. Most parents buying a dresser plan to use it for years.
