There are many important parts to a go kart, however the essential part most beginners typically need help choosing is the motor. Knowing the right amount of power or how to configure the engine can be confusing process at the start, but once you understand the basics and know what to look for it is a somewhat simple process.

First off, there are many different brands of motors that will work for an ATV. You may have heard of Honda, Briggs or other motor companies. The small downfall is the motors are rarely labeled for go karts. When choosing the amount of horsepower you will need, often a 5 HP engine will do the trick. If you are making an off road go kart however you will need a bit more power to support the wheels and a heavier train, a 7 HP engine will fill this role.

Often, just taking an engine that would previously go on an ATV or motorcycle works well since they can go backwards due to a reverse gear. Also when looking at engines it is sometimes a good idea to consider electric engines since fuel can sometimes be costly depending on how often you use your kart. I prefer gas engines because of the increased power and length of use, but electric engines are a good choice for a casual go kart for your family. The lifespan is usually around 20-30 minutes and there is no harmful emissions which is a huge plus. With this new knowledge you will be able to make a solid choice when deciding on a new kart.
