If you are thinking of buying a used car, you will no doubt want to drive away with a great deal on a great car. Unfortunately, this is not always an easy task.
Getting a great deal can be extremely difficult if you approach this situation without full knowledge of what you want and how you can get it.
To help, here are 3 basic rules you need to take onboard before you go hunting for your next car
Rule 1: Do your Homework
Yes we know this is boring. We know you just want to get on with the task of buying your car, but if you don't do your research before committing yourself to a purchase you could end up with empty pockets and a tired old banger.
Before you even go out looking for a car, decide on which models you are interested in. Do some online research to find out the average cost, the known faults and running costs. This puts you in the best position to know whether the car you have been considering is the right one for you and your circumstances.
Once you have done some research local papers, local car dealer's websites or telephone local dealers and find out if they have the model you are looking for and what they are selling it for.
Don't forget to find out if you can part exchange your car and what each dealer would be prepared to offer you for it
Rule 2: Test Drive
Most Car Dealers will be happy to allow you to test drive the car you are interested in buying. By taking the time to do this you can rule out an obvious problems with the vehicle and also ascertain whether the car feels comfortable to drive
Rule 3: Negotiate
Just because you are quoted a particular price, doesn't mean you have to pay it. Don't be afraid to ask for a better deal. And negotiate. Most Car Dealers will be prepared to offer some flexibility on price in order to secure a deal.
