C-section: The Right Choice
Nowadays moms are trying hard to facilitate their pregnancy and childbirth
. So in recent years, many of them prefer to go through a C-section under general anesthesia, even without special therapeutic indications, but for the sake avoiding the pain. They even say about the fashion for cesarean section. But few people think about the consequences of such decisions, risks, and possible complications.
Certainly, you can find a doctor and pay him for such an unscheduled surgery, but will it be the best choice? Let"s see.
What is a C-section?
Caesarean section (C-section) is a serious abdominal surgery. In order to remove a baby, a doctor has to sever the abdominal wall and uterus. The surgery is performed under general or epidural anesthesia. General anesthesia may adversely affect a baby, whereas an epidural can cause a sudden drop in a mother"s blood pressure.
Today an abdominal wall is usually severed horizontally just above the pubis. This is so-called cosmetic incision, the scar left after it eventually turns into a thin white line. In contrast to the vertical scar, the horizontal one is hardly noticeable.
Baby gets removed from the incision either with hands, or with the help of special forceps. Once the placenta is removed from the uterus, it gets stitched up, then the abdomen gets stitched up, after that an icepack is put on the abdomen for several hours.
During the first few days after a C-section, a woman remains under close medical supervision. In the first hours after the surgery it is allowed only to drink some water, and nutrients are delivered into her body with the help of a dropper. Then she gradually begins to eat familiar food. She will return to her usual diet only on the fifth day after surgery.
A young mother will be able to walk only a few days after a C-section, to make things worse, any movement will be very painful. In addition, the scar should be alcoholized and bandaged a few times a day. And this is an additional discomfort. It is worth adding that any labors in their own right are uneasy challenge, and a voluntary surgery will only complicate the situation.
A young mother and her baby may be discharged from the hospital only after 10 days after the surgery, and the following delivery may be scheduled no earlier than in 2 years.
Should I do this surgery?
It is much said about the pros of a C-section, but in fact there are only two of them: vagina remains unbroken and a woman in labor feels no pain. There are much more cons.
First of all, there is a risk of infection invasion in the body. Secondly, such a surgery involves a great blood loss. Thirdly, an intestine function is weakened, which can cause problems. Fourthly, the recovery takes much longer than after a traditional birth, making it difficult to take care of a baby. Fifthly, the pain after surgery is inevitable and may last for several weeks, whereas women want to leave behind all the troubles and devote themselves to a newborn. It is impossible after C-section.
It is believed that a c-section does a minimal harm to a baby's health, whereas a natural childbirth involves the greater risks of various complications. But babies born in consequence of such a surgery run higher risks of respiratory diseases development, the prolonged general atony may be observed. Certainly, it is actually hardly important taking into account the necessity of an operative measure, but if a surgery is not scheduled, it is better to abandon it in favor of natural childbirth.
If you're afraid of pain, nowadays there are enough ways to make your childbirth less painful as possible. You should not necessarily go under the knife in order to get an epidural anesthesia. Today anybody can get it if they wish to facilitate a childbirth process. If you're still inclined to think about giving the birth this way, learn about the C-section as much as possible. Check with your doctor, talk to those women who went through such a surgery and make your own decision, considering all the "pros" and "cons".
