CD Duplication-What to Expect From Your CD Duplication Company
CD Duplication-What to Expect From Your CD Duplication Company
I remember the time when my band made our very first album. We were so clueless of the whole process of music production- from recording, mastering, to creating a band artwork that it took us a lot of time and effort. CD duplication might seem like the most unimportant(thus, easiest) step in the process but trust me, it should not be underestimated. After recording our music, someone said "yes! We're done""oh, except for CD duplicationbut that's the easiest part". Turns out, CD duplication is a bit complicated for first-timers. In order to avoid delays and unpleasant surprises, here are some of the things you need to know about CD duplication.
CD duplication usually takes 2-3 days from approval of artwork. If you don't want to avoid delays, then better prepare your artwork while you're recording your music so that once you're done with recording and mastering, you're artwork's already ready for reproduction.
The artwork is usually the cause of delay. As I've said, you should prepare the artwork beforehand. This doesn't only include the picture and the text, there are lots of concerns when making album artwork. You have to make sure that you follow the template (with the right dimensions) of the case you'll be using. You can ask the CD duplication house of their templates and send it to your designer. You might also need to ask your distributor of their standards in packaging and whether they have additional requirements.
CD duplication is not the same as CD replication. CD replication is the better choice and is usually preferred by big artists. It is said to have better sound quality compared to duplicated CDs but the difference is almost impossible to tell. CD duplication is similar to burning CDs from a desktop computer. The data is ripped and copied to a blank CD. CD duplication is recommended if you only need a few CDs (500 units or less) because it's cheaper and faster. There are companies who offer short-run CD duplication if you want to test market your music first or if you need additional CDs. The minimum units for short run CD duplication is 100 and the turnaround time is 1 day.
Everything will be copied to perfection. If you have code and type errors, then expect to see them in each of the 1,000 CDs you have duplicated. Make sure you check each section, each word, each letter of your booklet and CD packaging before giving a go signal to your CD duplication company. Although they will check for errors, you are 100% responsible for the content. Before sending anything, make sure you have included every name that you need to give credit, make sure the fonts are the same in every page, make sure the lay-out is perfect, etc.
CD duplication is in fact so easy if you know how it works and you have the necessary requirements. Take time to read about it and make a checklist of things to bring and think about while you're still weeks away from recording. Contact your CD duplication company so you would know what to expect from them and so you can prepare the specific requirements for your project.
