COMPUTER MONITOR MAINTENANCE

A computer monitor is an electronic visual display unit used for viewing the output of computers. The monitor comprises of a display device, electronic circuit and an enclosure. The CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors are slowly phasing out and are being replaced by the LCD (liquid crystal display) monitors. Get some computer help to learn about a few things that we should take care of while using a monitor. Those are enumerated below.

1) Always make sure that the vents at the back of the CRT are dust free, so that the hot air can get released properly.

2) Try not to keep the CRT monitor or even the LCD near heavy electronic equipments like machines using powerful transformers etc. There will be a lot of interference in the display and you might see wavy picture. If you are using an UPS (uninterrupted power supply) for the computer, it should be placed at a distance from the monitor.

3) Do not keep your monitor always turned on. Unless you switch the monitor completely off, it can't discharge itself, even if it is in standby mode. It takes a toll on the charge storage devices.

4) If you see a black screen with a moving rectangle in your monitor just after turning the computer on and also a "Hz" in it, it is possibly because the monitor cannot cope up with the refresh rate or a newly added hardware, for example a graphics card. Try shutting down the computer, disconnect the cable that supplies power to the monitor and after 15 seconds reconnect the power cable again. Turn on the computer in safe mode (where it uses basic VGA display) and see whether the monitor is able to display in a proper way or not. If it is able to display in safe mode then it could be some software problem or driver issue.

5) Make sure that the cables are connected in a proper way without any damage on it.

6) Go through the menu options of your monitor. Try not to change anything that you do not understand fully like gamma ray radiation, red blue green balance, aspect ratio etc. In some monitors the "degauzer" is inbuilt. If you see that there are light and dark spots in the monitor even after turning it off and that is not some finger impression that I am talking about, rather it is due to "fatigue" of the pixels, then you can use the degauzer. Do not use any external degauzer in this case.

7) Using a screen saver (not a very complex one) is always good for the monitor screen.

8) Always use latest graphics drivers.

9) If connecting the monitor with a different computer is possible then go for that. It is a good way to isolate the problem. The problem could be with the VGA section of the motherboard (of the computer) itself, which has nothing to do with the monitor. Cross checking in this way eliminates such a possibility.

10) Make sure that the Ground Wire of the 3 pin socket in the main supply is in good working condition. It is good to check whether "earthing" is okay or not.

11) Do not try to open the back of the monitor if you are not a technician yourself. It is a risky thing to do so.
