Cafe breached food safety regulations

Any company that is involved in the preparation and sale of food must ensure it complies

with various safety regulations designed to protect the public from health problems.

There are many ways in which this can be achieved and using compliance software and a temperature sensor are just two.

By investing in such measures, businesses can reduce the likelihood they will be the cause of food poisoning outbreaks and can also prevent potentially costly legal battles.

One cafe that failed to adhere to the rules recently was Room 4 on the Isle of Wight.

According to reports in the Isle of Wight County Press, environmental health officers used a public protection law for the first time in six years in order to remove food from the Ryde eatery.

The officials had previously told the owner to make improvements, but he allegedly failed to do so.

Among the items that were taken away were baked beans, mozzarella cheese, ham and separate containers of unidentified meat.

The produce was stored in refrigerators at an environmental health headquarters, where a temperature sensor may have been used.

During the time it was there, an application was made to Island magistrates for the food to be condemned.

Because the court was satisfied that the items did not comply with safety requirements, this request was granted.

Commenting on the development, Isle of Wight Council environmental health manager Amanda Gregory stated: "Thankfully on the Island we seldom have the need to use our powers to seize food from businesses, but this demonstrates that we will use these when necessary to ensure customers are protected."
