Cairns, A Fabulous Tourist Hotspot
Cairns is a tropical city in northern Queensland that is very popular with tourists both domestic and international
. It is blessed with a hot climate and surrounded by rainforests, and serves as a gateway to the Kuranda and Daintree rainforests, the Great Barrier Reef and far north Queensland.
The site of the city was once home to the Walubarra Yidinji aboriginal people, and was mapped by James Cook aboard the Endeavour in 1770, and it was recognised as having potential for a port over several further expeditions- this became a necessity when gold was found inland. Local agriculture and the port meant that Cairns quickly developed into a regional centre. The city was used as a base for operations in the Pacific during WWII before becoming more focused on tourism in recent years.
The heat of Cairns makes a dip inviting. There is no swimming beach in the central city, but beautiful beaches lie to the north and south. However, in the city there is a lagoon style outdoor swimming pool that is open to the public. Understandably, this is a popular hangout for locals and visitors alike! There is also a grassy promenade called The Esplanade in the area to sit and relax, sunbathe and people-watch. There are also barbecues and picnic tables available here, so anyone can while away a whole day just enjoying the area!
There are also night markets at the Esplanade, every night until late where you can buy clothes, games and knicknacks. Pearls are a hot commodity in Cairns as they are grown and harvested in the area, so check out some of the shops selling the lustrous little stones. They range from cheap to expensive depending on the quality of the pearl, but the prices are more reasonable here than elsewhere!
Outside of urban Cairns, there is a lot of nature to explore. The surrounding rainforests provide nearly 200 walking tracks, and there are companies in the city that provide nature tours of rainforests and wildlife-heavy areas. In the other direction and out to sea, Snorkeling and Diving are the activities of choice, thanks to the beautiful Great Barrier Reef. There are of course many, many operators of large and small dive and expedition boats, so take your pick! The Reef is an underwater wonderland, and absolutely worth getting in the water to see.
Cairns is a gateway to some of north Queensland"s tropical beachside resort towns. Not far from the city is Palm Cove, an up-and-coming resort town on a beautiful beach. Many hihg-end hotels and restaurants can be found there, and also opportunities for walking in the bush and on the beach. Further north is Port Douglas, located on a peninsula with an inlet on one side and the gorgeous 4-Mile Beach on the other.
