Cake Decorating: A Few Suggestions For Getting Started
The key to designing and making a stunning cake is not to enroll in a culinary school;
just learn the basic techniques and then practice, practice, practice.
It doesn't take years of training and intricate knowledge to make fantastic cakes - just a will to learn and the effort it takes to practice. You will, however, also need the right equipment in order to help your cake decorating go as smoothly as possible. The following tricks can help you make a fantastic cake.
1. You want a smooth layer of icing with no cake crumbs. The key to accomplishing this is a thin first layer of frosting. Experts call this a bottom coat. Once you have this on the cake, refrigerate for 20 minutes. This sets the icing and keeps any cake crumbs from getting trapped in the next layer.
2. Apply the next layer of icing with an icing spatula and smooth it out. A good way to get a really smooth surface is to dip the spatula in cold water, then hold it flat side down over the top of the cake.
3. You can opt to dust your cake top with powdered sugar rather than ice it. You can leave the powdered sugar as the top or add a stencil for a more decorative approach.
4. You can also use decorations on the cake; edible ones are preferred. Nuts, candy pieces, sprinkles, coconut shavings and the like will give a unique flair to your cake.
5. If you want to add texture to your icing, then look for a cardboard comb. This item can be found in any good baking supply store.
6. If you want to add piping to your cake, you have to get the piping bags and metal tips for it, which you can use to push frosting through and make it form unique shapes that you can decorate the cake with. All manner of objects and designs can be used with the right piping bag and techniques.
7. Many top bakeries use fondant to decorate their cakes. Fondant is a smooth, white paste, but you can buy it in colors as well. It does not taste as pleasing as butter cream, but it has a sleek, elegant appearance to it. You knead and roll fondant like cookie dough. But instead of cutting things out, you cover the cake with it.
If you really want to make a professional looking cake, you should take a course. If there are no courses in your area, try a video. There are also step-by-step instructions you can buy. You can learn how to make a beautiful cake from scratch with some time and practice.
