Cake Tickets - Cake Serves Up Snippets Of New Album Before Release
Although Cake's as-yet-untitled sixth studio album isn't set to arrive until the spring of 2010
, fans signed up to the rock band's mailing list will be privy to bits and pieces of six different new songs in the upcoming months. Described as "a hook that can stand on its own," each song snippet can be used as a ringtone and is available for download for free.
The first of the six available ringtones, "Long Time," became available on Oct. 13, and fans can check out the ringtones by signing up for the mailing list on Cake's website. Cake vocalist John McCrea recently sat down with Billboard online to talk about the band's new material and why they decided to serve up a taste of their new batch of songs. "In light of recent changes in consumer expectations, I had been thinking about releasing an entire ringtone album instead of real albums," revealed McCrea. "This just seemed like a good way forward to that eventual goal."
In addition to creatively creating buzz before releasing their new album, Cake was innovative in the recording studio, as well. The band converted its Sacramento studio into a 100 percent solar-powered space, which should come as no surprise, as Cake was hailed one of Billboard's 10 "greenest" bands. McCrea told Billboard online that the new album, which was written, rehearsed and recorded under the greenest of conditions, is almost finished and will feature the addition of new acoustic instruments that add "warmth to the mix."
While it may seem expensive to convert a studio into a solar-powered space, the extra electricity is being purchased by the City of Sacramento's public works, which means Cake is actually making money for their excess wattage. Said McCrea, "As the value of recorded music descends into near nothing, we have to added security of knowing there will be a 10 or 20 dollar check coming in each month."
Cake's forthcoming untitled album is the follow-up to 2004's Pressure Chief, the band's last album of new material and the follow-up to Cake's most lauded album, 2000's Comfort Eagle. But while it has been a few years since McCrea & Co. released a new record, the band did release a compilation of selected outtakes titled B-Sides and Rarities in 2007. Cake songs have recently been featured in blockbusters like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You, Man, as well as the NBC show Chuck, and this past June the band re-released its 1994 debut album Motorcade of Generosity on 180 gram vinyl and as an enhanced CD.
Cake scored its biggest hit to date with the infectious song "The Distance" off its 1996 sophomore album Fashion Nugget and enjoyed similar success with "Never There" off 1998's Prolonging the Magic. While Cake is busy putting the finishing touches on its upcoming album (which will arrive via its own Upbeat Records,) the band does have sporadic concert dates lined up, such as a New Years Eve gig at Seattle's Moore Theater, so look out for Cake tickets to see them live.
