A cake can be a real centrepiece at a party so its important to get it right

. Most commonly at childrens parties for the simple reason that they have crazy imaginations and can think way beyond the limits of the icing. Baking cakes is not everyones cup of tea, but the trick is not to be scared and just give it a go. Below are five simple ideas which should hopefully get you inspired to create something magical.

Pirate cake

The beauty of this concept is that you can achieve a great result quite easily by simply making the base the water and dumping a boat shaped cake on top. With the addition of some styled icing and some chocolate stakes for the masts you can create yourself quite a convincing ship without a huge amount of technical ability. Its a great way to start and you might be surprised how well it turns out.

A little party cake of your own

These will be great for young and old and whether you are a creative genius or not these are most definitely easy to do. The starting blocks are very simple and include some shape stamps, a sheet of rolled icing in various different colours, some decorative icing for colour and a plain and simple cupcake. Take your various different shape cutters and create some nice patterns to place on top of the cupcake. Organize the various different shapes and sizes and colours in such a way that each cupcake is unique. You can then use the squeezey icing to write names on or further decoration.

Pool party festive treat

Again something that isn't going to be too taxing on the creative talent with icing molding etc. With most of the figures swimming in the water you can disguise and avoid having to do great detail which makes this a great starting point for many. A traditional pool shape is a nice and simple rectangle so this is the best place to start, and from there you can decorate it with various different coloured pieces of icing both soft and squidgy. As I said before the characters are quite simple as they will be mainly submerged in the water and just need to be little floating heads. These solid lumps of icing will be the envy of many a mini party goer.

Eskimo party cake

There are plenty more ideas that can come from the igloo cake idea but its a good place to start you off. Be sure that when you bake your sponge cake, which will create the basis of your igloo, that it is a dome shaped bowl that you bake it in. The starting shape for your igloo is then created and your job made a lot easier. By cladding the sponge in a layer of rolled white icing and using some it food colouring to paint on the detail and brick lines you can create a convincing Eskimo home. Now using the remaining off cuts you will be able to recreate the entrance your of your Eskimo home. The great thing about this cake is that its basic shape can be used in many different ideas, what other shapes do you know that are similar?

Snaky Cakey line

Taking the versatile idea of cupcakes you can create many different ideas by simply decorating the top according to what character you wish to achieve and then arranging them to suit . For a snake just arranging them in a slithery wiggle will look perfect. The head and the tail can be baked cakes and represent a greater level of detail to give the cake a better feel. I originally saw this idea as the hungry Caterpillar and the head was simply a circular red cake .

These are just a few ideas but they are by no means all. The important thing to remember is that it only has to be simple and dont get carried away with the detail. Besides the important thing here is that everyone loves cake so it doesnt really matter too much what it looks like
