Calamita Cosmica - The Giant Skeleton

Italy is a place where you get to see some extraordinary tourist spots

. If you happen to be in Italy, then don't miss to visit the MAXXI museum. This MAXXI museum is an important Italy tourist attraction because of its 24 meters long giant skeleton - Calamita Cosmica meaning Cosmic Magnet. Can you believe this to be a man made skeleton? Yes, this is a peculiar man made skeleton crafted by the artist Gino de Dominicis.

Gino De Dominicis, the man behind this art was an artist who was obsessed with immortality, invisibility and attainment of impossible goals. But unfortunately he was unable to obtain any of these. Gino De Dominicis was not interested in revealing his art works and also did not even give a chance to publish it through photographs. He avoided press and kept himself away from shows. Gino De Dominicis won the International Prize at the Paris Biennial. In 1910, during the anthological exhibition that was held at the Centre National d'Art Contemporain of Grenoble, he exhibited the Cosmic Magnet.

Gino De Dominicis completed this Calamita Cosmica shortly before his death. This skeleton was moved from place to place in Europe before it was settled in MAXXI. It was revealed to the public in 1990 in France at Centre National d'Art Contemporain in Grenoble and in 1996 it was moved to the palace of Capodimonte in Naples. Later it was moved to Mole Vanvitelliana, Ancona in Italy which is the home town of the artist. It was then moved to Palazzo Reale at Milan, then Versailles, Belgium, and in June 2010 it was brought to Rome. Now this outstanding sculpture is displayed in Museo Nazionale della Arti del XXI Secolo (MAXXI) of Rome.

Gino De Dominicis's work mostly had a humanoid figure with a broad forehead tapering into a pointed nose. This is why Calamita Cosmica is a human skeleton with the extraordinarily pointed long nose. He has been a role model for number Italian artists like Maurizio Cattelan, Paola Pivi, Pietro Roccasalva and Diego Perrone.
