After a night off, Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff was back on top for the Flames on Dec

After the game, Kiprusoff said, "Overall, we played a really good game. That's what we needed. We've had some tough times lately and we know we had to bounce back. We're going to be home for a few games now so this is a big win."

The goaltender was rested on Dec. 15 in a contest against the St. Louis Blues because he stopped 81 shots in his two previous starts. Kiprusoff told the press his team was ready to battle right from the start. The goaltender noted that a couple of his teammates had great hits early in the game and it "was a good team win."

With 2.9 seconds left in the first period, Calgary's Olli Jokinen beat Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar off the faceoff and drew the puck back to Jarome Iginla on the power play. Iginla quickly passed the puck back to Phaneuf at the blue line, and the defenseman sent a laser shot past goalie Jonathan Quick. The referee called upstairs for a quick video review. The goal stood and Phaneuf recorded his seventh goal of the season. It was his first goal in 20 games. Phaneuf said, "Olli did a great job winning the draw and Iggy made a great pass putting it right in an area where I could get it off."

Los Angeles coach Terry Murray was angry with his team's coverage on the play. The coach stated that if the Kings closed quickly on Phaneuf and did not hesitate on the play, there wouldn't have been a shot at the net. Murray continued to say, "You can look at that and say, 'Man, with seven-tenths of a second left, that's a hard one to swallow.'"

At 1:02 of the third period, Kings defenseman Alex Martinez had his clearing attempt intercepted and the Flames got the puck deep to Daymond Langkow, who set up Dawes for a one-timer for his 10th goal of the season. The goal extended the Flames lead to 2-0.

The Kings finally scored a goal midway through the third period when Corey Elkins fired a shot that went past Kiprusoff. It was his first NHL goal in only his second game. The 6-foot-2, 215 pound forward said, "It's an amazing feeling. It's unfortunate that we couldn't have also got a win to go with it." The Kings had three power play chances to get back into the game, but couldn't capitalize on the man-advantage. Los Angeles dropped to 8-2-1 in its last 11 games. The Kings have eight days off before resuming play in Phoenix on Dec. 26.
