California: History Of Location Scouting
Film locations in California are aplenty
Film locations in California are aplenty. There are so many amazing places to shoot. There is more than 1,100 miles of breathtaking shoreline, there is grand daddy of all parks, Disneyland, hundreds of golf courses, national parks, wind tousled peaks, Death Valley lakes, desserts and never ending visually brightest night life, California perhaps is Gods example of how He can bless a place with all His blessings.
No wonder, CA remains a favorite spot for filmmakers since 1930s. Do you remember Laurel & Hardy tried to drag a piano up a really long staircase? That was shot in Walnut Street for the movie, The Music Box. The original King Cong franchisee began its journey here during 30s, some portion of the movie was shot in Shrine Auditorium. King Kong was followed by many big budget horror movies like Frankenstine, The Wolf Man, Dracula, Psycho and Back To The Future.
Even before that, during 1920s, Charlie Chaplin shot some important portions of his movie, "The Kid" here. Charlie rescued the heroine who was about to commit suicide by throwing herself from Colorado Street Bridge. That bridge still exists at Colorado Blvd. Another milestone movie, Safety Last is one of the sequences was filmed at Brockman Building which was located at Los Angeles in the 530 W. 7th Street.
Era of 1940 saw classic like "Going My Way" being filmed in CA. Location was church rectory at Saint Monica"s Catholic Church, located at 715 California Avenue, in Santa Monica. Another gem of that era was "Its A Wonderful Life."
During 50s, landmark movies like "Touch of Evil," "Sayonara," "Them," "War of the Worlds," "Rebel Without A Cause" were filmed here. For "Sayonara" Marlon Brando shot some important scenes at Yamashiro Sky Room resturant. "Touch of Evil" saw Orson Welle was appearing for the last time in silver screen. In "The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" the protagonists were shown watching the giant pods being unloaded from trucks in the town square. That sequence was filmed at the town square of Sierra Madre, CA. It is is located at the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Sierra Madre Blvd.
The tradition continued during 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s ans 200s when movies like "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?," "Yours, Mine & Ours," "Hello Dolly," "Inside Dolly Clover," "The Princess Diary," "Payback," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," "Zathura," "Click," "Little Miss Sunshine," "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," "The House Bunny," "Transformers 2," "Tron: Legacy," "Iron Man 2," and "Death At A Funeral" became part of this iconic city.
