California's Earthquakes

On Jan. 17, 1994: At 4:30 a.m., a 6.7-magnitude earthquake tore through the city of Los Angeles. The quake, with its epicenter in suburban Northridge, ruined buildings and destroyed freeways in the closely populated area, killing more than 50 people and leaving 20,000 homeless. Recovery took months, and expenditure for maintenance services in California ran up to about $30 billion. Officials estimated that the death toll would have been much higher if the quake had not hit so early in the morning, when many people were still at home.

Los Angeles and California in general is known to have had the occasional earthquake mainly due to the location of the San Andreas Fault line in San Francisco. Because of the close proximity to the fault line, the danger of one massive earthquake emerging is always lingering in the minds of many of its citizens. And with the regular occurrence of sudden earthquakes, it is obvious that building maintenance in California should be considered as one of the things to always keep an eye on.

For a city like San Francisco, this is especially true as it is directly in the path of the San Andreas Fault line and is frequently being visited by seismic activity every now and then.

This usually involves patch up work for the damaged areas like walls, ceilings and floors and then the restoration of peripheral and exterior surfaces like windows, panels and elevations. At the end of the day, it is always good to be prepared in the event that a calamity like this takes place. Fortunately, there are men and women out in the field who are trying their best to not let anything like the 1994 earthquake happen again.
