Caller Id - How Does This Work

Can you imagine being engrossed in your work and all of a sudden the phone rings

? To make things worse, aside from the fact that you need to stop whatever you are doing to take the call, the call is just from someone who wants to sell you some encyclopedias. Isn't this a nightmare? Well, there is definitely nothing wrong with encyclopedias, but if you want to purchase one, surely you would have gone to the store and got it yourself. The point is it is really very frustrating to be disturbed from work by calls which are not really that important at all. So, what could be the solution to this dilemma?

Various telephone service providers, as well as internet telephone service providers have integrated a system that tracks caller's numbers, and even names, by registering these pieces of information on the telephone unit of the receiving line. The receiver will always have the option to reject or receive the call. Thus, receivers can easily reject or ignore unwanted and unexpected calls. On the other hand, receivers can conveniently take calls that may be unexpected but are familiar. Indeed, the caller ID has become very helpful to most individuals. But, how does a caller ID system really work?

A caller ID is basically made up of two separate pieces of information which are the calling number and the subscriber name. Although the subscriber name is not available in all telephone services, the calling number is standard information for a caller ID though. These pieces of information are registered on the telephone equipment of the receiving line, under the condition that the receiving line is subscribed to a caller ID service.

Pieces of information such as the calling number and the name are transmitted to the receiving line as soon as the originating phone switch sends out a particular phone number as a caller ID. The telephone company or telephone service receiving the call looks up for the pieces of information matching the caller on its database. This is then how caller ID information is transmitted to the receiver's line. Although some pieces of information are not really reliable, since these are just based on the information generated by the phone switch and the telephone service provider; authorities have ensured the trustworthy operation of these entities.

While the caller ID is a standard feature in most telephone services nowadays, the extent of the information displayed on the receiver's end is dependent on the service provider. There are many certainly many telephone service providers out there today. In addition, there are also many internet telephone service providers that offer caller ID feature in their Voice over IP service. One of the most popular internet phone services is CallCentric which offers caller ID with a name to its subscribers. This amazing feature is free for all CallCentric members and can be activated on the CallCentric Preference page. Thus, if you want to enjoy the benefits of Caller ID with a name, you can always check out CallCentric.
