Are advertisers soon to boldly go where no other advertiser has gone before?

For as long as man has existed, he has looked up at the cosmos and been blown away by the size and beauty of the universe. Even today, when looking up at the night sky, it's difficult not to stand in awe of the Moon and stars and the realisation of our insignificance in the seemingly never-ending universe.

Unfortunately, the ability to stand and take in the sheer massiveness of the night sky is becoming more difficult as populations and associated light pollution restrict views around the world. Where as just 50 years ago, the night sky was alive with tens of thousands of blazing stars, most people in heavily populated areas are now lucky to see just a few hundred or less.

Today, one unspoilt wonder remains, even in locations where light pollution has largely destroyed once dark skies. The Moon in all its glory never fails to impress. Look at it through good binoculars or a basic telescope and it soon becomes clear that what appears to be a perfectly smooth round disk is in fact a world with its own terrain, mountains, craters and surface features to explore.

In an age where branding is king and getting an ad seen (be it at a major sporting event or on the back of a toilet door) is everything, advertisers are constantly looking for new and unique ways to push their brand and the products they offer out to the general public. With seemingly bottomless pockets, some companies like Google are casting their eyes to the skies, where no advertiser has gone before.

The moon is not owned by any nation or company, but offers the biggest billboard opportunity of all time with a worldwide audience of billions. For this reason, some of the biggest companies in the world including Google are looking at ways they can utilise the Moon as an advertising platform. With recent advances in laser technology, is it just possible that the Moon's surface will soon be etched with the logos of today's biggest corporations?

This in itself brings up a whole host of questions such as: Who decides if this sort of advertising is allowed? Who will benefit from the enormous fees that would ultimately be paid by the first and biggest advertiser and, ultimately, who will have a controlling voice on such advertising tactics? One thing is certain, money talks and it is highly likely that within the next decade, the Moon will be ablaze with the flickering logos of countless advertisers like some all year round astronomical Christmas tree.
