Camp For Free!
The mountains and coastlines of Greece and the Greek Islands are amongst the most impressive and beautiful in the world
. For decades they have been one of the destinations of choice for backpackers looking to escape the modern world and have a simple, relaxing vacation. The climate is also perfect for camping holidays with long, dry summers and plenty of sunshine.
OK, Its Not Entirely Legal, But...
There are official, well appointed and inexpensive campsites throughout Greece but the appeal for many hikers and backpackers is to get a little off the beaten track and pitch a tent on a remote beach. Technically, free camping is illegal in Greece and campers should only pitch their camping tents in an official campsite. In reality, however, a blind eye is cast if the camper follows some unwritten points of etiquette.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind:
When choosing where to put your camping gear and pitch a tent, you need to follow some basic rules. To camp on the busy part of a town beach would be rather too obvious and you could expect to be moved along rather promptly. If the authorities did pay a visit they would simply ask you to pack up your tent and give you directions to the nearest official campsite. Normally, they would give you time to do this by suggesting that they will return in 2 hours to check that you have moved on. If you have not moved on, then they may impose a fine, so its a good idea to comply.
So, the first tip is to find a part of the beach which is a little away from the center of town and is less populated. After all, this is far more pleasant than your tent being surrounded by hordes of tourists during the day.
A Shower and Bathroom, Anyone?
Ideally look for a beachside taverna or cantina at the end of the beach as far away from the main town beach as possible. Go in and order some food or drinks and ask to speak with the owner. Ask if they have any objection to you pitching your tent nearby and explain that you will be taking meals and refreshments in their establishment. Most will be helpful and suggest where the best place for your tent will be. You will be able to use their toilet facilities and beach shower as a paying customer and, providing you follow the next points, they will be happy to be your new friend. In the unlikely event you get a no then move on.
A Few More Tips:
When you have made camp, there are a few things that you will need to remember.
1. Do not light a fire, especially in the high summer months. Forest fires often start from campfires in Greece and it is a sure fire way to get an angry tavern owner stomping towards your tent. You may be able to get away with using a Coleman grill, but even that in the dry season probably isnt a good idea.
2. Act sensibly during your stay dont be noisy, drunk or troublesome. The last thing this the tavern owner wants is someone putting other customers off being there.
3. If you choose to bathe naked, walk further down the beach so you are not in view of customers at bars or tavernas. Look around and be sensible. If everybody is naked too or you are totally alone, then you should be fine. Nude bathing in crystal clear waters is something a lot of campers enjoy but, like free camping, it is one of those illegal activities that are overlooked if done discreetly.
Lastly, honor your agreement with the establishment and you will be treated like one of the family and will be surprised at the generosity you will receive. Then enjoy falling asleep under the stars with just the sound of the Aegean waves lapping the shore.
