Campsites in Edinburgh Have Your Little Piece of Land in the City
I have always found camping to be a very calming experience. The fresh air, the countryside and the feeling of having a tiny home-from-home in unfamiliar surroundings have always appealed to me.
There are three campsites in Edinburgh. One is located in the south of the city near the Pentland Hills and two are located on the coast.
Please note however that the site in the north-east of Edinburgh at Seton Sands is a caravan park with private caravans for hire and is not suitable for camping.
All of the campsites in Edinburgh have their own character, strong points and take on the city.
Walk the coastline or conquer the hills....?
The Edinburgh Caravan Club is located in Silverknowes, an attractive area of north-west Edinburgh.
It is an excellent, modern campsite and caravan park with great facilities. If you own a camper or plan to hire a caravan you will be happy to know that the site is open all year round.
The huge advantage of this site is its proximity to the coast and Cramond Island while being only a 20 minute drive from the city centre. You can also take the Lothian Buses 27, 29 or 37 (see above) running between the city centre and Silverknowes.
You will be able to enjoy views across the Firth of Forth to Fife and gaze at the impressive Forth Rail and Road bridges in the distance.
If you are really up for an adventure, you could wait until the tide is out and venture across to Cramond Island, a tiny outcrop of land in the estuary.
Mortonhall Caravan and Camping Park is set in a private 200 acre country estate. The site is beautifully maintained and has stunning views of the Pentland Hills to the south.
Again, a drive or bus ride of only 15 minutes will see you in the city centre. The Lothian Buses number 11 (see above) to Hyvots Bank will take you to Mortonhall.
Of all the campsites in Edinburgh, Mortonhall has arguably the best location. The opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Pentland Hills is the great advantage of this campsite which you really should take advantage of.
From Mortonhall you will also be able to see Midlothian Snowsports Center, owner of the longest dry ski slope in Europe. It is definitely worth driving 2km down the road to check it out.
Mortonhall Caravan and Camping Park is also very close to the Edinburgh City Bypass, your gateway to hidden gems in the greater Edinburgh area such as Rosslyn Chapel, Torduff Reservoir and Gullane Bay.
McKinley Holiday Homes is located in the Seton Sands area of Edinburgh. If you are lucky with the weather or you have brought some good weather with you, the beach at Seton Sands is a great place to be.
Compared to the other two campsites in Edinburgh, Seton Sands is a reasonable distance from the city centre. However, the Lothian Buses number 26 (see above) actually terminates there. Take the number 26 to Seton Sands at the end of the line and you're in beach-country!
If you are interested in booking a holiday home or motorhome this is a site worth considering. Although they do not have an area for camping, they have a wide range of static caravans to choose from.
The site is within walking distance of the beach and they also have a swimming pool and excellent day and night time entertainment.
The formidable Mr Midge...
Allow me to tell you a little story....myself and one other unfortunate person were once camping on the gorgeous island of Skye in the Scottish highlands. It was August and as is often the case during the summer in Scotland, it had been raining overnight.
We woke however to beautiful sunshine and steam rising from a nearby bog. The perfect playground for the mischievous Mr Midge....
On opening the tent door we were attacked by what seemed like a million midges (Scotland's infamous flying insect). Our only real defence was to escape the tent, run around in a circle shouting 'get them out of my eyes!' and 'get in the car!'
Our fellow campsite dwellers looked on in bewilderment from behind their protective insect nets and clouds of bug spray wondering what on earth we amateurs were doing.
After hauling the tent down in 5 minutes and throwing everything in the car, we assessed the damage...
Camping is a wonderful experience but like most things in life, preparation can be the key to success. Compared to the highland scenery, campsites in Edinburgh are not terribly popular amongst the midge population. However...if you do not want to risk getting insect bites in your eyes and mouth or any porous area for that matter, bring plenty of insect repellent and/or protective insect net!
This little insider tip could multiply your enjoyment factor ten-fold. My little red spots have just about disappeared....
