It seems like such a simple solution, a weekend away

, to have an impact on or save your marriage after cheating. The thing is, when used properly, it can have a huge impact on whether or not the two of you are able to save your marriage after cheating has put it through the wringer so to speak.

The problem is that it isn't the weekend away that does the trick so much as how you use that time.

Don't get me wrong. Taking a weekend away from the distractions of the real world, the temptation of the other woman or man (as the case may be) and the reality of married life, bills, work, children, and household chores is a good step in the right direction but there has to be a little more to it than a simple change of locale.

You both need to be willing to have a few painful discussions in hopes of opening up hearts and minds to the possibility of a future together to make this weekend escape work.

Here are a few things you need to do during your time apart in order to experience real results that may ultimately save your marriage.

1) Figure out where things went wrong. This is the key to solving the problems in your marriage that would otherwise eventually sabotage your relationship all over again. You have to know when, why, and where things starting going south between the two of you and fix the problems that can be fixed and find out a way you can both live with the ones that cannot. You can't change who you are but you can make concessions for the sake of your marriage.

2) Reconnect mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. If you can't do these things now you may never be able to do them. While it's not good to rush back into a physical relationship, using the time when you are on neutral ground and not in your own bed or a bed that may have been shared with the "other" person that came between you is a good time to see if there is even a spark left.

3) Decide a path you can both take together and make a plan for your journey. Marriage is not a destination. So many people make that mistake. They believe that the act of getting married is the end of the journey and fail to see that it is only the beginning. Don't let that happen to you. Now is the time to plan bigger, better, and more amazing journeys for the future.
