Can Anyone Steal the iPod Mantle?
How often do you hear someone referring to MP3 players as iPods now
? Do you find that sometimes if you're reminding somebody to bring certain items with them as they're going somewhere you tell them not to forget their iPod rather than saying their music player or MP3 player? If so, you're not alone: nowadays, it's becoming increasingly common to use the word iPod as an all-inclusive term for MP3 player. And the reason behind this? Well, it's simple: everybody has an iPod, so the chances are that by referring to an MP3 player as an iPod when you're reminding your friend to bring the tunes as they're walking out the front door, you're probably getting it right.
Okay, so not everybody has an iPod, but it's certainly true that the majority of MP3 player owners do. Apple has gained a real advantage over the market, and not without reason. Let's face it: iPods are smart, functional and creatively put together. They're easy to configure and everybody and their grandma can work their way around one without too many problems. Even Apple haters ought to admit that the devices are well made. The truth is that they've created a good product and have the marketing and manufacturing know how to keep their customers hooked. That is, by releasing a new iPod every now and then with a new feature or two that you simply have to have or miss out, Apple ensures that it not only grabs new customers with the appeal of its products, but old ones continue to lap up the latest models for fear of being caught out with an older, uncool one. It's a very smart marketing scheme and one that has proven extremely effective for the likes of Apple.
It really seems that Apple is going to enjoy a long time in the top spot when it comes to the world of music players. While several other manufacturers did their best to compete in an increasingly difficult market, Apple has continued to grow in popularity, meaning all competing products have weakened and even been shoved out. Whatever happened to the Creative Zen? Sure, it's undoubtedly still developing and being bought, but you hardly hear about Creative's latest innovations over the latest
iPod Touch 8GB 4th generation now, do you? Perhaps one day another manufacturer will manage to steal the iPod's mantle - but it doesn't look as if that day will be anytime soon.
