Can Exfoliation Keep You Looking Young?
People have been using exfoliation for centuries to remove the dead skin from their bodies
. It is loved by those who want to maintain the youthfulness of their skin. But what is the theory behind why it is supposed to work?
People have been using exfoliation for centuries. It has long been thought to be the perfect solution for removing dead skin cells. The skin is the biggest organ of the body. And it consists of several layers and new layers are constantly growing. Skin grows from the bottom, which means that the older skin is always on the surface. As time goes on, this old skin eventually begins to have a lifeless appearance to it. When, however, you remove the older skin, the new skin is allowed to shine through. Since it is newer, it makes you seem younger.
Therefore, looked at in a different way, exfoliation is not really a skin rejuvenating process. At least not for the top layer of skin. It is simply allowing the skin that has already been rejuvenated to surface. The actual rejuvenation occurs as the exfoliation process stimulates the skin cells which encourages the renewal of cells beneath the old top layer.
Normally, if you want to exfoliate the skin or a portion of the skin, you will rub it with an abrasive material. There are various grades of abrasives manufactured for this purpose - from harsh abrasives to mild abrasives. Usually, in the cosmetics counter, you will find these abrasives under various names with the most popular one being facial scrubs.
A very unique and intensive type of exfoliation is a process referred to as microdermabrasion or microderm. In most cities, quite a few spas offer this type of cosmetic procedure to remove the outer layer of the skin. Specifically, the technique is commonly used to remove acne scars from the skin and for sun damaged skin. You will often hear this procedure described in more informal terms as a power peel.
Today, however, you can have this procedure performed in many places in addition to spas. For example, it is not that difficult to find many home microdermabrasion kits that allow you to give yourself this procedure in the comfort of your own home. As you might expect, these are much more inexpensive than having the procedure done in a spa. A good spa, however, will be able to better diagnose exactly the type of exfoliate that would be best for your skin type and condition.
Physical methods are not the only way in which to exfoliate the skin. You can do it via chemical means as well. These usually involve the use of a mild acid solution such as beta hydroxyl acid which removes the outer layer of dead cells from the skin. For deep cleaning, the spa will use a more concentrated version of the acid solution.
A lot of people become addicted to skin peels. Especially after their first one. They love the results and make the error of overdoing it. When done to an extreme, instead of helping to rejuvenate the skin, it will actually start to harm it.
