Can Herbal Tea Cure High Blood Pressure? Examining A Natural Remedy

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension

, is a dangerous condition that affects millions of individuals. It is estimated that one out of three Americans has high blood pressure. Of those who do suffer from this serious medical condition, one third do not even realize they have it. For this reason, it is sometimes called a silent killer. Fortunately, there are some easy, natural ways to lower blood pressure. One of these is by drinking herbal teas.

There are a variety of different herbal teas that can be used to lower blood pressure in individuals suffering from hypertension. The first is alfalfa tea. To make this beverage, combine one teaspoon of crushed alfalfa seeds with four cups of water. Boil this mixture for thirty minutes it and then strain the liquid. It is recommended to drink a cup of this tea six to seven times a day to help with high blood pressure. The second type is called hawthorn tea, which can be made by combining one teaspoon of crushed hawthorn blossoms, one teaspoon of crushed hawthorn leaves and one cup of boiling water. This combination should brew for 20 minutes. For the maximum health benefit, let the tea cool and drink one half of a cup two to three times a day.

Marigold tea is another great option for treating hypertension. To make this tea, add two teaspoons of crushed marigold flower heads with two cups of boiling water. Allow it to brew for 15 to 20 minutes before removing the flower heads. For the best results, drink one cup two times per day.

Finally, hibiscus herbal tea may be a great remedy for hypertension. One study that tested the effects of this tea concluded that adults who drank 24 ounces per day had lower blood pressure than those who drank a placebo. Because it is considered a natural treatment, the hibiscus herbal tea did not produce any side effects. One expert was so impressed with the results that he even compared the effect of the herbal tea to that of a prescription medication. Doctors are not sure why the hibiscus herbal tea works to treat this medical condition, but it does contain the strong antioxidants of phenols and flavonoids. The tea is dark red with a flavor that is commonly compared to cranberries.

Before trying any method to lower blood pressure, be sure to consult with your doctor. Herbal tea may not be the best option for everyone who suffers from this condition. Your doctor may also recommend prescription medication.
