As a general rule, bidders cant cancel their bids on eBay

. There are, however, exceptions or certain mitigating circumstances in which eBay allows relaxation of this policy. In such cases, the bidder needs to fill out the eBay bid retraction form at least 12 hours before the scheduled auction closing.

Typographical error: If the bidder types in a higher amount by mistake, then eBay allows retraction of a bid. For example, if you enter $350 instead of $35.

Bidders are allowed to cancel or change their bids if the seller changes the description that changes its perceived value. To give an example, if instead of a new mp3 player, it becomes almost new, and then the bidder has every reason to retract their bid.

Many times, sellers are unavailable at the end of an auction, leaving no choice to the seller to cancel and rebid elsewhere. This is also acceptable provided due time is allowed to lapse, as per eBay guidelines.

In cases where any kind of fraud has occurred, eBay recognizes the bidders right to cancel the bid. For example, somebody else bids on your behalf without your knowledge.

Lastly, if the seller agrees to cancel a bid, then a bidder also can retract their bid. Sometimes a phone call or nicely worded email can do the trick; sometimes not. At the end of the day, it is at the sellers discretion.

Barring the above cases, all bids are binding on the bidder unless the said item is illegal to sell, or some other eBay rule can be shown to have been broken. Failing to respect that will end in a lawsuit, which the non-paying bidder will lose in all probability going by past cases.

Respect the fact that withdrawing or canceling a bid can have serious impact on the bidding process and cause losses to the seller in terms of both time and money. People cannot retract a bid for any of the below reasons:

1.They dont have the money.

2.They got a better deal on the product elsewhere.

3.They did not read the specification carefully.

4.They were upset or emotionally distraught at the time of bidding.

5.It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Retraction history is included in the feedback profile of the seller and leads to other sellers blocking them in future. This profile stays live for as many as 12 months. Repeated cancellations can even lead to an eBay inquiry and cancellation of the non-paying bidders account on eBay. It is therefore important to exercise caution when placing a bid. The bidding process works best when all parties show respect toward the philosophy and the ethics of bidding.
